Brooks, 20, is eligible to play for both United States and Germany, but he recently opted against featuring in the Americans' Under-20 World Cup campaign.

He made his first appearance for the U.S. Under-20 team in 2010. He has also played with the German Under-21 squad, but did not make the team for this summer's European championship.

"The appointment will give him a boost," Hertha manager Michael Preetz told kicker.

The 6-foot-5 Brooks signed a new deal with Hertha in June, tying him to the club until 2017.

He was a regular fixture for the team last season, making 29 appearances as the club won the German second division.
