Alan Pardew has revealed that striker Yoan Gouffran is providing a strong case to earn a central striking role at Newcastle this season.

The former Bordeaux striker joined the Magpies in January, and spent his first six months at the club predominantly in a wide position. However, with Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi the only other recognised strikers in the squad, Gouffran has been given the chance to flourish in a central role during pre-season.

“I think all strikers want to be the No. 9 who gets the goals and plays through the middle,” Pardew told the Evening Chronicle. “That’s a very important role for this team. Gouff has shown that he can give us quality in that area and, depending on our business, he could get a good start there.”

Pardew has also indicated that United are likely to abandon the 4-2-3-1 formation that his side operated with for much of last season.

“I hope to play with two strikers this year more often than not,” he said. “I want competition for those two players. Gouff will definitely offer that.”
