Villarreal have signed former Spain Under-21 goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid with an option to make the move permanent.
The 24-year-old Asenjo was brought to the Vicente Calderon from Real Valladolid in 2009 but found his opportunities limited as first David De Gea and then Chelsea-owned Thibaut Courtois laid claim as the first-choice goalkeeper.
Asenjo, who also suffered a serious knee injury while at Atletico, was loaned out to Malaga during the 201/11 season before agreeing to join promoted Villarreal.
“Villarreal, subject to the signing of the contract, have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid for goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, who will play on loan for the 2013/14 season at the Yellow Submarine,” Read a statement on www.villarrealcf.es.
“Also, Villarreal, have the option to buy the goalkeeper at the end of the loan period."
