Named football's most valuable franchise earlier this year, Real Madrid now tops the world's most valuable sports teams, according to a list published by Forbes Magazine on Monday.

European football teams garnered the next two spots as well with Manchester United at No. 2 ($3.17 billion) and Barcelona at No. 3 ($2.6 billion). The New York Yankees baseball club were ranked fourth, valued at $2.3 billion.

With a value of $3.3 billion, Real Madrid took over as the most valuable football franchise in the Forbes rankings earlier this year for the first time since the financial publication began assessing the value of football franchises in 2004.

Madrid, run by Florentino Perez, have sponsorship deals with adidas and Emirates airlines, worth a reported $42 million and $39 million per year, respectively.

Manchester United, owned by the Glazer family, took the No. 2 spot with a value of $3.1 billion. FC Barcelona ($2.6 billion) was third. Arsenal ($1.33 billion) was ranked 10th behind four NFL teams and two baseball clubs.

In January, business advisory firm Deloitte said that Real Madrid was the first club in any sport to surpass $650 million in revenues in a single year (2011-12 season).
