Barcelona are in talks with Roma centre-back Marquinhos as they look to bolster their defence ahead of next season, according to Marca.

APMarquinhos has attracted plenty of interest around Europe.

With Eric Abidal having left the Camp Nou for Monaco and Barca captain Carles Puyol’s constant injury problems a cause for concern, the Catalan side have identified a new central defender as their key objective in this summer’s transfer window.

The attempted signing of Thiago Silva, a long-term target of blaugrana coach Tito Vilanova, is proving difficult, with the Brazilian’s agent claiming on Monday morning that his client will be staying at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Liga champions are also rumoured to be closely monitoring both Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and Chelsea’s David Luiz, however, according to Marca, should Barca fail in their bid to lure Silva, they will turn to his compatriot Marquinhos.

The 19-year-old would apparently be available for around €30 million and the Spanish newspaper claim his agent, Roberto Calenda, was in Barcelona at the weekend to try and push through a deal for defender.

Ironically, PSG are also eager to sign the youngster, which could potentially reopen negotiations regarding Silva, should Marquinhos head to Paris.

However, the Roma player, who shone in Serie A last season, is believed to favour a move to the Camp Nou.
