Former Inter Milan defender Maicon is on the verge of returning to Serie A, with Roma set to complete a deal for him on Monday.

Manchester City full-back Maicon, 31, arrived in the Italian capital on Monday, posing for photographs outside Fiumicino airport before travelling to the club to undergo a medical, after which he should put pen to paper on a two-year contract.

“I’m happy, but let’s wait for the medical first,” the former Champions League winner told Gazzetta dello Sport, which also reported that he had agreed a significant salary cut to return to Italy, where he spent the most successful six seasons of his career.

Maicon won four Serie A titles, two Coppa Italias and the Champions League with Inter. He was part of their 2010 treble-winning squad, but featured only infrequently for City following his move from the Nerazzurri last summer and was told he would not be in new boss Manuel Pellegrini's plans.

Meanwhile, Roma are close to agreeing a deal with Paris Saint-Germain for the reported €35 million sale of Marquinhos, also a target for Barcelona, and midfielder Kevin Strootman could be on his way in after negotiations with his club, PSV Eindhoven, advanced over the weekend.

That just leaves the future of Pablo Osvaldo to be resolved. The Italy international appears to have snubbed an offer from Southampton, despite Roma agreeing a fee with the Premier League club.

He has said his future depends on what Roma director of sport Walter Sabatini wants, with the club apparently intent on offloading the 27-year-old.
