Getafe have completed the permanent signing of left-back Sergio Escudero from Schalke for a reported fee of €500,000.

Escudero, 23, who has penned a five-year contract, spent the second half of last season on loan at the Liga club.

The former Real Murcia man made a total of nine appearances and scored one goal in that time, before suffering an ankle injury in late March.

Escudero struggled to make an impact during his time in Germany, racking up just 12 Bundesliga appearances for the Royal Blues in his three years at the club.

With the defender now off their books, Schalke could re-enter the race for Fulham full-back Sascha Riether.

Riether, 30, had been linked with a switch to the Bundesliga in June, but talk of a possible transfer cooled after Fulham and Schalke failed to negotiate a transfer fee for the former Wolfsburg man.

The Royal Blues had been willing to pay up to €2 million for the player’s services, but the Premier League club were holding out for €2.5 million.

Meanwhile, Schalke were defeated 3-1 by RB Salzburg in a pre-season friendly on Thursday. Julian Draxler cancelled out Salzburg’s opener, only for Martin Hinteregger to grab the winner with a long-range effort from well inside his own half.
