Norway international Vegard Forren has returned to former club Molde just six months after joining Southampton.

Forren, 25, signed for Southampton for a reported £3.5 million in January, following rumours of interest from Liverpool and Everton.

However, Forren failed to break into manager Mauricio Pochettino's plans and did not make a single first-team appearance last season.

The defender returns to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer-managed Molde for an undisclosed fee, joining midfielder Richard Chaplow in leaving the club.

“On behalf of Molde, I am happy and proud that we brought him home,” Solskjaer said at a press conference on Thursday. “He played in the national team last time he was here and he was a rock for us. We’ll get him back into the picture.”

“I’ve had six good months at Southampton,” Forren said. “I’ve trained with many great players, but the important thing is for me to play football and I can do that here at Molde. I am grateful to get the opportunity to play under Ole Gunnar.”

Chaplow, meanwhile, has seen his contract mutually terminated, allowing him to move to Millwall.

Saints confirmed on their website: "Southampton football club would like to wish Richard and Vegard the very best in their future careers."
