Joey Barton's agent has hit out at Marseille, claiming they should be doing more for the midfielder as he attempts to negotiate a way out of Queens Park Rangers to join them.

Following Barton's 12-match ban at the end of the 2011-12 Premier League campaign, Marseille took him on a season-long loan, during which he said he wanted to stay at the Stade Velodrome permanently.

Club president Vincent Labrune and coach Elie Baup both said they were pleased with Barton's contribution as Marseille finished runners-up to Paris Saint-Germain, and a three-year contract for Barton has been drawn up.

Although the offer includes a salary of €150,000-a-month - the part of Barton's monthly wage OM paid last season, with QPR responsible for the remainder - the player has said money would not be an issue.

However, with negotiations between Barton and QPR continuing, Marseille have begun exploring alternatives, notably Paris Saint-Germain's Clement Chantome, provoking anger from agent Willie McKay.

"I'm very surprised by OM and president Labrune," Le Parisien reported him as saying. "I thought that Marseille would make more of an effort for him.

"He's liked by everyone at the club and, after Mathieu Valbuena, is the most popular player with the fans and in terms of shirt sales. He deserves better from OM."
