Gus Poyet has said he believes Thiago Alcantara would be capable of “making history” at Barcelona and voiced his surprise that the Catalans were considering allowing him to leave for Manchester United.

In an interview on Catalan TV programme Esports en Xarxa, the former Brighton manager said: “When I heard about a possible move away, I couldn’t believe it - I never thought it would actually happen.

“I see Thiago as the replacement for Xavi, Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas. He is someone who could make history at the club.”

Like Poyet, many Barca fans hold Thiago in high regard and are concerned that - as with Gerard Pique and Fabregas – they are again in danger of losing a La Masia graduate to the Premier League as speculation that the move will happen continues to grow.

But while Thiago’s future is still up in the air, his younger brother, Rafinha, has decided to commit to Barcelona for another three years. Rafinha, currently a Barça B player, signed a contract extension on Thursday.
