The move, given the go-ahead by the South Korean Unification Ministry, means the team will become the first from North Korea to play in the South for four years.

It comes despite continuing tensions between the two Koreas, which remain technically at war under a truce that ended their 1950-53 conflict.

"The government on Friday authorised the visit of the North Korean women's soccer team which will be participating in the 2013 East Asian Cup," a ministry statement said.

The tournament takes place in the South Korean capital, Seoul, and the city of Hwaseong, between July 20 and 28.
