Ajaccio have revealed they had been plotting an audacious attempt to bring Alessandro del Piero back to Europe only for the ex-Juventus star to decide to remain in Australia.

Del Piero, 38, joined FC Sydney at the end of his Juve career last summer, a switch which seemed likely to be his final move before retirement.

That, however, did not deter Ajaccio, who have pulled off transfer coups by signing Mexican international goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and Romanian star Adrian Mutu in successive summers, from attempting to reunite the former Italian international striker with his ex-bianconero team-mate Fabrizio Ravanelli, the Corsican club's freshly-appointed coach.

"For several weeks now, the club has been in advanced talks with the famous Italian attacker Alessandro del Piero," a statement on the club's official website read.

It added "the goalscorer will, finally, not come to AC Ajaccio. It's for family reasons Alessandro del Piero has decided to continue his adventure in Australia."
