Diego: I'm thinking only about Wolfsburg
Wolfsburg playmaker Diego, who has been heavily linked with a return to his former club Atletico Madrid, has said he is happy to stay in Germany.
Diego, 28, said he was focusing only on the Bundesliga season ahead, and was not thinking about a possible move.
“It is great to play in the Bundesliga, because Germany has the best football in the world at the moment”, he told the Wolfsburger Allgemeine. “I have nothing on my mind but to play for VfL at the moment.”
The Brazil international said Atletico had approached him, but added: “I can say that I will play for Wolfsburg next season, because that is the situation right now.
“But I can’t say if Atletico will make an offer for me, because that is out of my hands. To make me leave Wolfsburg, it would take a really good offer, both to me and the club.
“Wolfsburg must decide if they want to renew my contract. If they make an offer, we can talk.”
Diego spent a successful loan spell at the Liga club in 2011-12, helping them win the Europa League, and only returned to Germany because agreement over a transfer fee could not be reached.
VfL sporting director Klaus Allofs told kicker magazine: “Diego will stay with us” and indicated that the midfielder would soon be offered a new deal.
AS reported him as saying: "At the moment, there is nothing new. The current situation is that we want to work with Diego, and the footballer is still ours."
