Kevin de Bruyne is set to stay at Chelsea and fight for a place in Jose Mourinho’s team after the new Blues coach assured him he had a future in London.

De Bruyne, 21, was strongly linked with a summer move to either Bayer Leverkusen or Borussia Dortmund after an impressive Bundesliga loan spell at Werder Bremen last season.

But the Belgium international's agent, Patrick de Koster, told the Press Association: “Mr Mourinho gave a phone call to Kevin, explaining a little bit the situation for next season.

“We didn't receive any guarantees [of a place in the team] - but that's normal in a club like Chelsea.

“It's up to him to prove [himself], like he did in the last 18 months."

De Koster said signing a contract at Stamford Bridge had been “like a dream which became reality” for his client, adding that the time he had spent on loan since then had improved him as a player.

“He did very well,” he added. “Now it's up to him to prove the same thing at Chelsea."

De Bruyne will join compatriot Romelu Lukaku, who excelled on loan at West Bromwich Albion last season, in battling for a place in Mourinho’s line-up.

Another fellow Belgian, Eden Hazard, has established himself as a Chelsea regular.
