Atletico coach Diego Simeone had said a deal was “close”, while recent media reports from Spain had suggested personal terms were agreed and that he was on the verge of returning to the club he represented in a loan spell during the 2011-12 season.

“That is not true, there is no agreement,” Diego said. “As things stand, I will return to Wolfsburg on June 24 to start preparing for the VfL pre-season.”

It remains unclear whether the 28-year-old will see out the remaining year of his contract or even agree an extension.

The Brazilian had suggested in January that he may seek a move to a club playing in the Champions League as he seeks to secure a place in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squad for next summer’s World Cup.

Naldo, his Wolfsburg team-mate and fellow Brazilian, shares that ambition and hopes Diego remains at the club.

“We are better with Diego, everyone knows that,” he told kicker. “He has shown that he can be a great player. My hope is that he will stay here for a long time.”

The centre-back, who has four Brazil caps, said the World Cup is his “one big goal” and added: “Our coach Luiz Felipe Scolari closely follows Bundesliga. I know that.”
