Germany Under-21 captain Lewis Holtby is a major doubt for the side's opening game of the European Championship against the Netherlands on Thursday, according to kicker.

Holtby, 21, missed Tuesday's training session due to a problem with his right thigh.

The Tottenham midfielder was also forced to miss Germany's preparations camp for the tournament in Israel as he was in the Bahamas - where he first picked up the injury - for an end-of-season friendly with his club.

"I would have loved to be part of the preparations camp," Holtby said. "But the England Under-21s and Clint Dempsey, who has five competitive games coming up with the United States, remained with Tottenham until the end too."

While Holtby had hoped to return for the clash with the Netherlands, he is now facing a race against time to be fit for Thursday's game.

He will, however, have a fitness test on Wednesday when he joins the Germany squad for their final training session ahead of the match at the HaMoshava stadium in Petah Tikva, near Tel Aviv.

Germany, the winners of the 2009 European Championship, have been drawn in Group B alongside the Netherlands, Spain and Russia.
