Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of young Brazilian forward Leo Baptistao from Rayo Vallecano for an unconfirmed fee.

Leo, 20, impressed during his first campaign as a senior Rayo player, playing in a number of different attacking roles, before his season was cut short in April by a collarbone injury.

The starlet's contract had been up for renewal at Vallecas this summer, and Rayo’s city neighbours moved quickly to seal the deal for a fee reported to be between €5 million and €7 million. The move was confirmed via a statement on the club's official website on Monday.

"Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano have reached an agreement for the transfer of Leonardo Carrilho Baptistao to the rojiblanca club,” the statement said. “The Brazilian forward with an Italian passport, 20, has committed to five seasons with Atletico. Leo Baptistao has played 28 games this season, 26 as a starter, scoring seven goals and contributing decisively to Rayo's great campaign."

While Leo has played on occasion as a number nine at Rayo, he is generally seen as more effective coming from a deeper position. Atletico are therefore likely to return to the market to sign a more like-for-like replacement for Radamel Falcao, who joined Monaco for a reported £50 million last weekend.
