Roberto Martinez has warned winger Callum McManaman against a possible move to Liverpool, saying he needs to spend another season at Wigan.

McManaman has enjoyed a sparkling breakthrough year at the DW Stadium, capped by his man of the match display in Wigan's shock 1-0 FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City.

On Friday, it was confirmed that the winger will be sidelined for three months by an ankle injury suffered in the 4-1 defeat at Arsenal, meaning he misses the European Under-21 Championship.

Liverpool have been linked with a summer move for McManaman, but Martinez said he believed that would be a poor career choice.

"I think that if one player needs to stay at the club and become an important part of this football club, it is Callum," he explained.

"Callum has been a phenomenal player for us, but he still needs to work at certain aspects to become the player he can be and will be. In the Championship, to play week in, week out will be perfect for him."

Martinez said he would decide in the next ten days whether or not he stays with Wigan following their relegation from the Premier League. He has been linked with the Everton job.
