Wolfsburg rebuff Diego interest

Wolfsburg general manger Klaus Allofs says Diego will stay at the Bundesliga side, despite renewed interest from Atletico Madrid.

Associated Diego has played for Brazil 33 times, scoring four goals.

Diego had spent the 2011-12 season on loan at Atletico when he helped them win the Europa League. But since returning to the Bundesliga he has been part of a troubled team, on their third coach of the season and who will not qualify for European football next season.

This is a blow for the 28-year-old, who is hoping to force his way into contention for Brazil’s World Cup 2014 squad. And Atletico, who have qualified for next season’s Champions League already, remain hopeful of striking a deal for the midfielder.

“We are negotiating, but we have not reached a financial agreement,” the club’s president Enrique Cerezo was quoted as telling Spanish TV station Canal+ on Monday.

But Allofs remained “relaxed” when confronted with the rumour, saying: “That’s pure nonsense. I have also heard about Atletico saying ‘Wow, that’d be great if he could return’. We have not been in contact. Diego is happy here. He will stay.”

Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking wants to build his new squad around the former Juventus man, who is contracted to the Wolves until 2014.

He said: “It’s Diego’ aspiration to play internationally and that is also the way we want to develop,”
