Eriksen, 21, has emerged as a major contender to fill the role of Mario Gotze for Champions League finalists Dortmund, with Gotze joining Bayern Munich in the summer. His agent is reported to have discussed a potential switch with both clubs.

De Boer told NOS: “Jurgen Klopp called me last week to congratulate me on winning the title, and he asked me about Christan Eriksen.”

The Ajax boss, who described Klopp as “a great person and a very good coach” said the chances of Eriksen leaving were now are as high as 80%.

The player has said he is keen to join Dortmund and told reporters after Ajax’s 2-0 victory at FC Groningen: “Everyone knows this might have been my last game for Ajax.

“Dortmund would be a club I’d like to play at. I like to think that I’d fit in there. They play great attacking football, just like I want to play. And they play for titles.”

He had previously been linked with a switch to the Premier League - and particularly with Liverpool - and said: “A few years ago, the Bundesliga was not an option for me.

“But the standard has increased. It speaks volumes that two German clubs are competing for the Champions League. It could as well be that the Bundesliga is now the best league.”
