Schalke have extended the contract of coach Jens Keller, with the 42-year-old set to remain at the Veltins-Arena until June 2015 after a successful start to his tenure at the club.

Keller was promoted from his position as Schalke's Under-17's coach in December after Huub Stevens was sacked as first team boss and has lifted his side from seventh to fourth in the Bundesliga.

Although Saturday's 2-1 defeat by Stuttgart put Schalke's top-four hopes in doubt, team manager Horst Held believes Keller is the right man to lead the seven-time German champions forward.

"We are convinced by his work in that we have seen the team evolve in the past few months," Held said. "Facing up to his critics he has stuck firmly and consantly to his line and put Schalke on the right road."

The deal laid to rest rumours that Keller would be replaced by former Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo or ex-Bayern Munich midfielder Stefan Effenberg in the summer.
