Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has said his only focus is on ensuring that the Magpies remain in the Premier League and told the Evening Chronicle he was happy to be on Tyneside.

After finishing fifth last season, Newcastle have endured a difficult campaign that has left them still facing the threat of relegation.

The club, who have struggled to strike a balance between their commitments in domestic and European competitions, face already-relegated QPR at Loftus Road on Sunday and then play Arsenal at home.

And fans' favourite Cabaye said: "I have three years of my contract left, and now my mind is just on saving the club.

"We have two cup finals, then it will be the holidays. But I am at Newcastle. I don't want to think about the future with two games left.

"I am very, very happy to play for this club and these fans. We all made some mistakes at the start of the season. That's why we are fighting relegation. But, if we learn from our mistakes, no problem."

He said Alan Pardew's team needed to "finish strongly and then prepare well for next season", adding: "We have to be ready to fight and play and be ready again in the Premier League like we were last season."
