Real bowed out of this season's competitions with a 4-3 aggregate defeat as Ronaldo admitted the first leg rout in Dortmund was the key to their elimination, not a failure to score more goals at the Bernabeu.

The Portugal international missed a number of chances to score the decisive goal for Real and insists his side should be gunning for their tenth Champions League title

"The first leg was key, but today we demonstrated we are a team that could have been in the final," Ronaldo said. "We missed chances, we scored too late. I want to congratulate the fans for their support. We're sad because we knew there was a final game. We have proven to be better than them, but the score in the first leg was key."

Sergio Ramos' late goal gave Real hope of completing an unlikely comeback and echoed Ronaldo's views that a similar performance in the first leg would have seen the Spanish giants emerge on top.

"It's a shame. You can lose, this is football. If we lose it must be this way," Ramos said. "We should have played like this in Dortmund. We have a lot of pain for the fans. It's a shame to have been so close. The missed chances in the first half cost us."
