Kruse, 24, who has a €1.5 million release clause in his contract, is believed to be on the verge of signing a three-year deal with Leverkusen.

The former Melbourne Victory man has impressed during his first season in the German top flight, scoring four goals and setting up another six. Kruse also made 11 appearances for Dusseldorf during their promotion-winning campaign last term.

“It is not that easy if you fall out of a kangaroo pouch on another continent, needing to find one’s own bearing,” Dusseldorf coach Norbert Meier said last season.

The Australian will give Champions League hopefuls Leverkusen extra depth with Germany international Andre Schurrle looking set for a move to Chelsea.

Leverkusen are also working on bringing in Belgium international Kevin de Bruyne on loan again as part of the deal. However, it is unclear as to whether De Bruyne, who has impressed during his current loan spell at the club, is keen on another season at the BayArena.

Borussia Dortmund, who are reportedly willing to splash out more than €10 million on a permanent transfer, could be an option for the Chelsea loanee.
