An Indonesian footballer faces a heavy punishment after punching a referee in the face during a Super League match on Sunday.

The incident happened when the official awarded a penalty to Pelita Bandung late in their game against Persiwa Wamena with the scores at 1-1.

Footage showed that, after the spot-kick had been given, Wamena player Pieter Rumaropen ran up behind referee Muhaimin and punched him.

Muhaimin was taken to hospital, suffering excessive bleeding from the nose, and the game was stopped for 15 minutes before a replacement official took over and sent Rumaropen off.

"The case has been forwarded to the disciplinary committee," league communications manager Azwan Karim said. "There will be an extra penalty as well as the red card."
