Dejan Lovren looks to have fallen out of favour at Lyon after the Croatian international defender was reprimanded by coach Remi Garde for claiming the club was "killing" his passion for the game.

Lovren, 23, was officially rested for Lyon's 1-0 defeat at struggling Reims last Sunday, though the decision was seen as a reflection of the centre-back's poor recent form. Lovren responded by telling Sportske Novotni in his native country that he felt "disappointed by certain people" at the club and that OL was "killing [his] calm and joy at going to training".

The former Dinamo Zagreb player, who has been linked to Liverpool and AC Milan in recent weeks, certainly did not have that joy on Thursday as he was missing from his team's training session for an unspecified reason. Garde's grim demeanour when he spoke about Lovren to OL TV perhaps offered an insight into the player's unexplained absence.

"Dejan is a young player and he was tricked a little bit. Having said that, you can't go against the club and the institution. I've spoken to him about it, and I cannot sanction what he did."
