Hannover captain Steven Cherundolo is hoping to return to the United States national team for the summer World Cup qualifiers.

The 34-year-old has already won 87 caps since making his debut in 1999 and hopes he can add a few more in June to help the US towards what could potentially be his third World Cup finals in Brazil next year.

"I have been in permanent contact with [US head coach] Jurgen Klinsmann," Cherundolo told German football magazine kicker. "Klinsmann always enquired after me. I have congratulated him and the lads on the important points in the World Cup qualifiers. There are three friendlies and two qualifiers during the summer. I want to be part of them."

Cherundolo had been sidelined since the winter break with a knee injury and returned to the Hannover team for their 0-0 draw against Stuttgart at the weekend. That was the defender's 296th appearance for the Lower Saxony side and he now is only two games away from breaking the record for appearances for the club.

"I have fully focused on my health and now focus on helping the team," Cherundolo said. "All those records, they would not have been possible without my team-mates. And without the fans. Or the coaches, who have played me throughout the years."
