March 25, 2013

The Young Socceroos will face host nation Turkey and South American heavyweights Colombia in the first round of the FIFA under-20 World Cup.

The Australian team have been drawn in Group C, which also includes El Salvador, for the tournament which kicks off on June 21.

The under-20s side will play their first group match against Colombia on day two of competition, followed by El Salvador on June 25 and Turkey three days later.

Coach Paul Okon said all groups in the World Cup would be tough but looked forward to testing his team.

"Playing in a World Cup is a huge challenge but none more so than playing in a group that has the host nation," he said.

"Every game will be a final and we look forward to representing Australia and showcasing Australia as a serious football country.

"We are confident that we can rise to this wonderful occasion."

The top two of each group, as well as the best four third-placed teams, will qualify for the first round of the knockout stage.

The Young Socceroos automatically qualified for the under-20 World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the AFC under-19 youth championships in the UAE last year.
