A third-minute goal from Daniel McBreen gave the Mariners an early lead and late substitute Mile Sterjovski finished the contest by scoring with his first touch in stoppage time.

The win moved the Mariners three points behind the leaders Western Sydney Wanderers, although they have the superior goal difference and so still have an outside chance of finishing top.

Elsewhere, Brisbane Roar ensured qualification for the end-of-season finals remained in their own hands with a 2-0 win over Melbourne Heart.

Brisbane thoroughly deserved the win achieved through first-half goals from Besart Berisha with a penalty and Thomas Broich.
