On-loan Wigan defender Paul Scharner insists he will return to Hamburg at the end of the season to fight for his place in the team.

Scharner, 33, joined the Latics for his second spell at the club on a six-month loan from Hamburg in January, after struggling to gain first-team football in Germany.

Hamburger Morgenpost has reported that several Premier League clubs are interested in acquiring the services of Scharner should he decide to leave the Bundesliga club.

The former West Brom man, however, says he is determined to regain his place in Hamburg’s starting line-up for next season.

“Nothing has changed about the fact I will return in the summer,” Scharner told Hamburger Morgenpost. “I will give it my all to break into the Hamburg team. And the experience I have in England will lift me. I feel that I can show what I am capable of when allowed to play.”

Scharner’s agent Valentin Hobel, though, says his client would look for a move elsewhere if he was told he was not needed by the club.

“Paul’s mindset towards Hamburg would change the moment they told him he should start looking for a new club,” Hobel said. “He would not want to stay in Hamburg if he was not needed.”
