Pjanic, 22, was forced off during the first half of the Giallorossi's 3-1 win against Genoa on Sunday.
The Bosnia international underwent tests on Tuesday which showed that he had picked up a ligament injury in his left ankle.
Roma said in an official statement: "The prognosis is four weeks, the footballer will start rehabilitation from today (Tuesday).''
The capital club take on city rivals Lazio in Serie A on April 7 - a fixture that could well represent the player's comeback date.
Pjanic, who signed for Roma from Lyon in 2011, has hit four goals in 20 appearances this season.
