Mainz took control of the match early on, with goals to Shawn Parker and Niki Zimling handing them a 2-0 lead inside five minutes.

But Zdenek Pospech's red card in the 65th minute turned the tie around, with Ivan Santini capitalising on an under-manned defence to pull one back for Freiburg in the 86th minute.

Just as the hosts looked set to hold on for the win, Daniel Caligiuri netted an injury-time penalty to send the match into extra-time.

It was Caligiuri who proved to be the hero with a goal in the 108th minute enough to complete the comeback for Freiburg.

In Tuesday's other match, Wolfsburg eased into the last four with a 2-1 win over Kickers Offenbach, despite some late resistance from the home side.

Ivica Olic and Bas Dost gave Wolfsburg something to show for their dominance with goals in the 49th minute and 71st minute respecitvely.

A late goal to Marcel Stadel gave the third division Kickers some hope of a revival, but they were unable to grab the decisive goal.
