Steven Reid wants Steve Clarke to do all he can to keep Romelu Lukaku at West Bromwich Albion next season, after his current year-long loan from Stamford Bridge ends this summer.

The Belgian international has already intimated that he would like the chance to continue his development at the Hawthorns and spend another 12 months there before returning permanently to Chelsea.

Chelsea paid £18 million for him two seasons ago and his 10th Premier League goal against Liverpool in Monday night's 2-0 win was the latest indication that Lukaku is finally coming to terms with English football.

Reid admits Lukaku has surprised many people at the Hawthorns with his impact since his arrival last summer, saying: "Rom has been amazing, a lot better than I thought he would be.

"Chelsea decided to loan him out and decided not to recall him last month which we're happy about. Hopefully next season there will be a scenario where we can keep him for another year."

The uncertainty about the long-term future of Chelsea interim coach Rafa Benitez and the prospect of more changes at Stamford Bridge next summer leaves doubts over where Lukaku will be next season.

And the attacking options available at Stamford Bridge has given Reid hope Lukaku might be allowed to go out on loan again.

"Chelsea tend to go with one upfront and they already have Fernando Torres and have signed Demba Ba," he said. "Maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing for them for Rom to get more games under his belt and, if so, hopefully he could do that with us.

"We saw just how good he can be against Liverpool. Rom tore them apart when the game became more open just like he did against them at our place.
