Blackburn have sent striker Edinho Junior on loan to Shillong Lajong until June 30 in a move the Indian club claimed will be “path-breaking”.

Portugal Under-19 international Edinho, 18, only made two appearances for Rovers, both in August, after moving from Olhanense last year and seemed to struggle with the demands of first-team football.

But Shillong Lajong General Secretary Larsing M Sawyan told the Press Trust of India: "It's a path-breaking event in Indian football. It has not happened in the past that a player from a big English club signed to play in an Indian club. The signing of Edinho will no doubt be a huge boost to the club and I am looking forward to some good results.”

Balaji Rao of Rovers’ owners Venky’s added: “We look forward to opportunities to help develop our players and football in India through strategic partnerships.”

Shillong are 11th in the I-League, only two places above the relegation zone, while Edinho’s departure is a sign that new Blackburn manager Michael Appleton is committed to overhauling his squad.

Appleton, who is trying to sign Tottenham winger David Bentley on loan, has now allowed three of Rovers’ summer signings from Portugal to leave Ewood Park for the rest of the season.

Diogo Rosado has gone to Benfica and Paulo Jorge to Beroe, while Appleton has also sent Ruben Rochina to Real Zaragoza and Mauro Formica to Palermo for the remainder of the season.
