The inaugural National Women's Soccer League will open its season April 13 with Portland Thorns FC visiting FC Kansas City.
Each of the eight teams in the league will play a 22-game regular-season schedule, spread out over 19 weeks. The top four meet for semifinal matches on Aug. 24, with a title game on Aug. 31.
After the opening match, which features U.S. national team star Alex Morgan of Portland, the season continues with three matches on April 14 -- Seattle Reign FC at Chicago Red Stars, Western New York Flash at Sky Blue FC (New York/New Jersey), and Washington Spirit (featuring U.S. national team star Abby Wambach) at the Boston Breakers.
The NWSL includes 23 American players, who are subsidized by the U.S. Soccer Federation. The Canadian Soccer Association and Federation of Mexican Football are doing the same for 16 players each.
