Walcott confident of fourth placed finish
Theo Walcott believes Arsenal have turned a corner in the bid to challenge for a top four finish, and is convinced his side are now robust enough to fend off their rivals for a Champions League spot.
Back-to-back 1-0 wins against Stoke and Sunderland suggest Arsenal are starting to develop a gritty quality to support their attacking flair, with Walcott convinced a winning mentality has developed in Arsene Wenger's revamped squad.
When asked whether Arsenal can overhaul fourth place Tottenham and secure yet another season of Champions League football, Walcott was unequivocal in his answer.
"We're very confident of doing that," he stated on the official Arsenal website. "We can battle through any sort of situation. The teams around us are winning as well, but we've just got to make sure we look after ourselves and try to win as often as we can.
"We'll see where we are at the end of the season, but we've got to show the belief we did at Sunderland, which was an important win. I felt there were a lot of winners in that dressing room and the boys were fantastic."
Meanwhile the much-maligned full-back Andre Santos has insisted he still has a future at Arsenal, despite sealing a loan move back to his native Brazil with Gremio until the end of the season.
"The idea is to go there, play well and be able to come back strong," Santos told the Evening Standard. "This is a loan deal and after this season we will see where everything stands.
"I always wanted to stay at Arsenal until the end of my contract. This is a club where I feel comfortable and honoured to play. However, when the club acquired another left-back (Nacho Monreal signed last month), it was clear to me that I will not play. I need to play, get my confidence back and Gremio is a good platform for this.
"We decided together this would be a good chance for me to get on top of my game. He (Wenger) gave me a hug and told me Arsenal would always welcome me back with open arms. He wanted to see me happy and if I am not performing all the time, then I am not happy."
