Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey believes he has been treated too harshly following an admittedly poor performance in the Boxing Day defeat to Stoke.

Shelvey, 20, hasn't made a Premier League appearance since that match, forced to settle for brief game time in the FA Cup ties with Mansfield and Oldham.

Although Shelvey has fallen out of favour with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers, he has gained selection for the England Under-21 side ahead of Tuesday's clash with Sweden.

Speaking ahead of the friendly match, Shelvey suggested he has been unfairly handed the blame for Liverpool's December woes.

"I played against Stoke and obviously I didn't have too great a game," Shelvey said. "I had a few personal issues that were going on in my life.

"I didn't think I was the only one that had a bad game that day but I was the one that suffered if you know what I mean. You just have to take it on the chin and work hard in training and try to get myself back in the team which I'm trying to do."
