Wayne Rooney hopes he has emulated his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo by firing Manchester United towards the title with a late winner at Craven Cottage.

The England striker took his tally to ten goals in as many games with a 79th-minute strike to give the league leaders a 1-0 victory over Fulham.

It was a goal that was reminiscent of Ronaldo's decider at Craven Cottage in February 2007 when United went on to become champions.

And Rooney told British Monday newspapers: "It was a little bit similar to Cristiano's goal. After that goal we went on to win the league and hopefully that can happen again.

"As you run through you always try and assess the situation and what you feel is best to do. It's a case of if you feel you can score or if a team-mate is in a better position to score but I fancied the shot and, thankfully, it's gone in."

United have now won 11 of their last 13 league games to open up a nine-point lead at the top of the division and Rooney believes this is a particularly significant victory.

He added: "It was a tough game and they made it tough for us. We had a few chances in the first half - hit the post and crossbar twice - but they made it difficult in the second half.

"We just had to keep going and believe we could get the goal, and thankfully we did. After that we hung on really well and it's a massive three points for us."
