The Giallorossi sacked the Zeman, 65, after a dire run of results and placed Aurelio Andreazzoli in temporary charge. Zanzi, speaking via a statement on the official website, saidthe club still believes in the project but had to act.

"Our decision today is based on confidence and consistency," he said. "To be clear our ownership has faith in our players, our football management and our strategy.

"We faced a difficult situation but addressed it in a responsible and strategic way. Aurelio Andreazzoli is a true football professional and has a strong track record with AS Roma. He knows the value of our players and has their respect."

Zeman himself issued a short message on his personal website which simply read: "I am sorry for the Roma fans, but I tried to give my all. Zdenek Zeman."

It is believed Roma will appoint a permanent replacement as soon as possible.
