Manchester United have agreed to loan striker Federico Macheda to Stuttgart.

Macheda, 21, who has only had 54 minutes of first-team football this season, will spend the rest of the campaign with the Bundesliga club.

The Italy Under-21 international told United’s official website: "I have followed the Bundesliga and naturally know about Stuttgart. I am glad that I can now play for the club.

"For me, it is about getting to know the team and what I can bring because we have a lot of interesting games in three different competitions in front of us."

Macheda sprung to prominence when, as a 17-year-old, he scored a stoppage-time winner on his United debut against Aston Villa in 2009. He then scored again, also as a substitute, at Sunderland the following week, two crucial wins as the Red Devils retained the Premier League title.

However, his career has since stalled and he has not scored a first-team goal since November 2011. His last Premier League goal came in November 2010 and Macheda has not appeared at all in the division this season.

This is the third successive season that United have loaned Macheda out, with the 21-year-old forward joining Sampdoria and QPR respectively in the last two January transfer windows, but he failed to score a league goal for either club.

He will become the third young forward to leave United on loan this month with Angelo Henriquez joining Wigan and Bebe returning to his native Portugal to play for Rio Ave.
