Formica, 24, spent two years at Ewood Park after joining from Newell’s Old Boys for £3.5 million in January.

But the Argentina international, who has not appeared for Rovers for the past six weeks, has become the first player to leave since Michael Appleton’s appointment as manager.

“Palermo Calcio announce it has reached an agreement with Blackburn Rovers Football Club for Mauro Abel Formica,” read a statement on Palermo’s official website.

A deal is expected to be concluded on Thursday, with Formica due to be presented to the media as a Palermo player on Friday.

One of Steve Kean’s first signings, Formica was compared to Gabriel Batistuta by Rovers’ former manager.

"He has been likened to a young Batistuta and I think he has that in the locker as well," Kean said after buying the attacking midfielder.

However, Formica only scored five goals in 54 games for Blackburn and lost his place in the Rovers team this season.
