South Africa beat Angola 2-0 at the African Cup of Nations on Wednesday, reviving Bafana Bafana's chances of making the quarterfinals.

Both of these sides were involved in 0-0 draws on the opening day of the tournament and Group A remained without goals until 30 minutes into Wednesday's match when Siyabonga Sangweni's volley broke the deadlock at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro sneaked a shot through Angola goalkeeper Lama's legs in the 62nd minute to give South Africa a vital cushion in the Group A game.

Majoro added to Sangweni's 30th-minute opener, when the defender sent a sweet left-foot volley across Lama and into the far corner to initially ease the crushing pressure on Gordon Igesund's home team.

Apart from a third-minute scare, when Angola's Mateus Da Costa flashed an early shot at Itumeleng Khune's goal, South Africa had the majority of the play.

Angola threatened seven minutes into the second half when Mateus crossed for Afonso Guilherme to take a first-time shot but Itumeleng Khune got down well to save.

South Africa midfielder Dean Furman's low shot was then tipped round the post by Lama as the chances continued to arrive at both ends.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Cape Verde held former champions Morocco to a 1-1 tie.

Cape Verde went ahead on a 35th-minute goal by Luis Soares, who wears "Platini" on the back of his jersey. Youssef El Arabi tied it for Morocco in the 78th.

South Africa (1-0-1) tops the group with four points, followed by Cape Verde and Morocco (0-0-2) with two each and Angola (0-1-1) with one.

South Africa plays Morocco on Sunday, when Cape Verde meets Angola. The top two nations advance to the quarterfinals.
