Sevilla have sacked coach Michel following Sunday's 2-0 Liga defeat to Valencia and a run of just six wins in 19 league matches this season.

Michel, 49, guided the side to ninth in the Primera Division in 2011-12 after taking over from Marcelino in February, but with Sevilla just six points above the relegation zone the board have decided to terminate his contract.

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido had given a vote of confidence to the under-fire coach in December, but the weekend's result proved to the final straw.

Former Valencia coach Unai Emery, sacked by Spartak Moscow in November, has been appointed as Michel's successor and has agreed a contract until 2014.

Emery, 41, who coached Valencia from 2008 to last summer, lasted just six months at Spartak, his first taste of managing abroad.

His first match in charge of his new club will be Wednesday's Copa Del Rey quarter-final first leg away at Real Zaragoza.
