Hoffenheim, who had set their sights on a place in Europe before the start of the season, endured a miserable start to their campaign that led to the departure of coach Markus Babbel in early December.

Marco Kurz was named Babbel’s successor ahead of the winter break and he faces a tough task ahead: when the Bundesliga resumes next weekend, Hoffenheim will be looking to make up a seven-point gap on Wolfsburg if they are to move clear of the relegation zone.

Having conceded 41 goals - the most in the Bundesliga - the club’s general manager, Andreas Muller, has been busy trying to reinforce the defence, although he admitted: “Our situation is not too tempting for a lot of players.”

It is reported that Hoffenheim are looking for a defensive midfielder and a new centre-back. After the transfer of Wolfsburg defender Emanuel Pogatetz fell through, they would appear to have turned their attentions towards Sevilla’s Fazio.

“He is a centre-back but could also play midfield,” Muller said.

Hoffenheim have already made a move, according to kicker, and hope to sign the Argentina international for less than Sevilla’s €6 million asking price. The paper reports that a decision on the transfer could be made quickly.

Fazio, 25, has been with Sevilla since 2007 and has featured in 12 league games this season. The Spanish side are expected to lose several players this month to ease their financial concerns.
