United looked set for a routine win when substitute Jeronimo, an early replacement for Bruce Djite, scored in the 29th and 37th minutes before Iain Ramsay added a third just after half-time.
Shane Smeltz's penalty in the 89th minute appeared to be a late consolation but Steve McGarry narrowed the deficit to one goal immediately after, to leave Adelaide clinging to a victory that helped them keep the pressure on the Mariners.
