Newcastle may be set to fail in their pursuit of Loic Remy after Marseille coach Elie Baup hinted the striker could remain at the club until the summer.

PA PhotosLoic Remy has scored three times in 19 appearances for Marseille this season.

The France international, 26, has been earmarked by Newcastle manager Alan Pardew as a potential replacement for Demba Ba who departed for Chelsea, but Bundesliga sides Schalke and Borussia Dortmund are also believed to be interested.

However, it is just as likely that Remy could remain with the Ligue 1 title challengers.

“For a year, every transfer window, we have been talking about his departure,” Baup told La Provence. “But he is still there. Maybe he still will be in the summer.”

Remy played for Marseille in a 2-1 win over Guingamp in the Coupe de France on Sunday before travelling to Marrakech for a three-day training programme with the club ahead of the resumption of league action this weekend.

And Baup says discussion about the players’ future will not weight heavily on his mind or affect his performance on the pitch.

“As this is the third transfer window where we are talking about his departure, he does not focus on it,” Baup added. “He seeks primarily to regain his touch. The physical side, he has found. He must now partner that with the co-ordination of movements and feeling of the game.”
