Baines, 28, scored his side's second goal against the League Two side at Whaddon Road as they cruised to a 5-1 victory, but was substituted after just over an hour.

Moyes said the left-back had an ankle problem that needed careful monitoring, but revealed that he had been included in the line-up because he wanted to field experienced players in what could have been a tricky tie.

"Leighton has got a bad ankle problem which I need to watch and be careful with," the manager explained. "But I felt we needed him because we have to respect the players at this level. I just felt we needed the people who knew what was going on.

"It was a very professional job. I want to try and progress in the cup - we've got a bit of momentum and we want to try and keep it going."
