Fiorentina have strengthened their bid for Champions League football by adding Giuseppe Rossi to their ranks.

The former Man United striker, 25, completed a transfer on Monday after the Viola announced the deal on Friday, with a fee of around €11 million expected to change hands.

Manager Vincenzo Montella says he is “very proud” to have signed the Villareal striker. The move comes after two injury hit seasons for Rossi but is a real signal of intent from Fiorentina who battled relegation last term but eventually finished in 13th place.

They have been revitalised under Montella and are currently in third place thanks to an entertaining brand of football drawing praise from all corners and the coach, speaking at a press conference this weekend, cited that improvement as key to attracting such high calibre players

He said: “Signing Rossi was a real coup. He is a talent we hope to recover for the end of the season and we will wait until he has completed his rehabilitation.”

“This is a sign that the club is operating well on the transfer market and knows how to convince the players by giving them motivation and ambitious targets.”

“Rossi had the choice between several different clubs but he chose Fiorentina and that makes me very proud.”

Meanwhile, Fiorentina general manager Sandro Mencucci moved to quash rumours that the arrival of Rossi - in the stands for the Viola’s 2-0 home defeat against Pescara on Sunday - meant an imminent exit for Stevan Jovetic. The striker has long been linked with Juventus but the director told Sky Italia: “Juventus have to get over it, Jovetic is staying next season even if Giuseppe Rossi has arrived.”
