A-League outfit Perth Glory have ruled out a January swoop for Stoke striker Michael Owen.

Owen, 33, had been linked to a move to Perth in recent days after making just four appearances for the Potters this campaign following his move from Manchester United.

However, while Perth coach Ian Ferguson confirmed talks were held, the former Rangers man insists Owen is not the answer to his side’s attacking woes.

“Michael is a player who comes with a high pedigree but it’s not the direction I want to take the club,” Ferguson said.

“I am looking for a younger player and a player who has been playing more regularly. I have three or four irons in the fire that I am pursuing, which is good.

“In terms of Michael, there was contact from an agent if we were interested, it was discussed at a good level, but I have made the decision he is the not the player needed at Perth Glory.”

Perth’s top striker Shane Smeltz scored a brace against Alessandro Del Piero’s Sydney FC side last weekend, but has failed to hit peak form this term. A place in the Glory squad was last week freed up by the departure of veteran striker Billy Mehmet.

Meanwhile, reports in the Australian media are linking Perth with former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen, who has been playing regularly in the Belgian Pro League for Cercle Brugge since joining the club last summer.
