Subotic, 24, suffered the injury during the first session of Dortmund's winter training camp in Malaga, according to Ruhr Nachrichten.

The initial prognosis by club doctor Markus Braun suggested that the Serbia international will be out for three weeks and miss the first couple of matches of the second half of the Bundesliga season.

Should that be the case and Subotic is sidelined, wantaway Brazilian Felipe Santana is likely to deputise against Werder Bremen and Nurnberg, with Germany Under-19 player Koray Gunter possibly winning a bench place.

There is some good news for Subotic, however, as he has agreed a new contract to keep him at the club until 2016. The defender sad: "I am delighted to stay part of the this team and I hope we can celebrate one or two future successes together."

Dortmund also announced on Sunday that Sven Bender has agreed an extension, signing for another year until 2017.

"We are delighted that we were able to tie two more key players from our championship winning team to us permanently," Dortmund general manager Michael Zorc said.

BVB coach Jurgen Klopp was equally delighted, saying: "I am happy the lads chose to continue to take the path we have chosen." "
